A day in the life of a Risk and Attribution Manager in the United Kingdom

Risk & Attribution Manager

How I looked for work

The current role I'm in I was headhunted for, but before that applying through websites such as efinancialcareers.com has proven useful.

How I found out about the job

Recruitment agency

The recruitment process

Ended up having 9 interviews up to executive level. Because it's a small company they are very particular about hiring the right people. I don't believe this number of interviews is common in the industry.

My career goals when I graduated

I wasn't sure to be honest. I slightly fell into the career I have.

My career history

Originally started out as an IT trainer. Gave me a good grounding in Microsoft excel (such a useful skill in finance) and then I found myself working for a pension fund using the excel skills I'd learnt. This led to some professional exams (IAQ) and a move to State Street where I became a performance analyst. Since then I've moved to UBS wealth management where I became the head of performance reporting and analytics. Most recently I've down sized and moved to a small company as a Risk and Attribution manager.

What has helped my career to progress

Being able to operate excel and use vba to a very amateur level has helped more than I would have thought.

Courses taken since graduation

IAQ, IMC, CIPM

How my studies have helped my career

Maths gave me a great basis for my career. I still use confidence intervals and statistical analysis to this day.

What surprised me about my career so far

How quickly it goes and how fast you can find yourself doing something you didn't expect.

Where I hope to be in 5 years

I don't like planning that far ahead. One of the reasons I chose to move to a small company was so I could influence many difference areas.

My advice to students considering work

It's hard not to, but don't focus on the starting salary when looking for your first job. If you find something you enjoy doing and become an expert in that field you will be rewarded whatever that field is.

My advice about working in my industry

Be careful about choosing the right company to work for. The work life balance is often more important than the salary on offer.

What I do

Calculate investment risk and performance analysis for a number of multi-asset investment funds

Skills I use and how I developed them

I use a fair amount statistical analysis and performance theory. Most of the skills are from taking industry exams such as IMC & CIPM.

What I like most

Problem solving

What I like least

Working at a computer all day long
