I took a step off the cliff edge by resigning from my job with an idea and little else.

My advice to students considering work

What excites you? Find your passion and then work out what this job leads to. In today's competitive world just turning up makes no sense neither does chasing short-term money.

My advice about working in my industry

Show interest in finance. There is so much available now for free on the internet/social media when previously it required a subscription to the Financial Times or an expensive financial data system. If you show interest the rest can be learnt. And if you want to work specifically in investments...then invest some of your own money to learn. It will give you something fantastic to talk about at a job interview

Other advice

Keep your CV to one page, research any company you interview with carefully, always ask question(s), be humble but dream big

Contacting me

Happy to answer questions on finance/investments, getting employment at big financial companies, self-employment and related.

What I do

Founder of an investment / financial research company offering both content and consultancy services

How I started my business

I took a step off the cliff edge by resigning from my job with an idea and little else. Over the last two-and-a-half years I have added a website, clients, services and product.

What inspired me

A feeling that success in a conventional large company was not going to keep me happy for the next stage of my career.

Skills I use and how I developed them

The key is a mixture of hard work and a natural level of interest. You can work on both but inherently they come from within. In short: follow your passion and don't chase money (it will come to you)

What I like most

Feeling of making a discernible difference, flexibility, creativity

What I like least

There are no guarantees in self-employment.

What surprised me most

What I am capable of. You never really know until you try. A good idea and hard work can really go a long way.
