A day in the life of a User Experience Practitioner in the United Kingdom

Human behavior, interaction and behavioral decision making are fundamental principles of life.

How I looked for work

1. Looked for jobs on the Careers Gateway.
2. Attended careers fairs and events.
3. Researched jobs in the desired location.
4. Checked and considered jobs suggested on departmental emails.
5. Completed voluntary positions to gain experience and get my 'foot in the door'.
6. Went to a recruitment agency for help.

How I found out about the job

An email from a career mentor in the psychology department

The recruitment process

1. CV and application questions.
2. Skype interview
3. Face to face interview in Leeds (2hours!)

My career goals when I graduated

1. Career progression
2. An interesting and meaningful career

Courses taken since graduation

Attended NUX talks and networking events to learn more about new methodologies and technology.

How my studies have helped my career

Studying psychology allowed me to learn how to run and report my own experiments and gave me the skills I needed in order to pursue a career in user experience.

Where I hope to be in 5 years

Senior UX Practitioner or within customer experience

My advice to students considering work

1. Start looking and applying early!
2. Don't panic! - working full time is hard work, don't rush into a job for the sake of having a job.
3. Make yourself stand out from the crowd - its a competitive world!
4. Money isn't everything (and often doesn't come until you've had a lot of training/experience)- choose a job you love.

What I do

UX practitioners observe real people using websites to work out where we can improve the usability and experience of using the site.

Skills I use and how I developed them

Microsoft office, statistics, neuroimaging, video editing, presentation skills, resilience, eyetracking, patience..

What I like most

Having a big project to get my teeth into and seeing the project through from start all the way to being at the cutting edge of a website that's about to be released to the public.

What surprised me most

How much research and continuous learning and development is required as part of having a full time job in order to keep up to date with the constantly evolving digital world.
