A day in the life of a Lecturer in Thailand

Lecturer in Thailand

How I looked for work

Sending my CV to different departments at different universities. Look for a job announcement on university websites.

How studying in the UK affected my job seeking

Having a lecturer from different parts of the world really encourage an exchange of viewpoints and expertise within the department. York is a well trusted university and people have good impression on studying in the UK.

How my studies have helped my career

- Knowledge and expertise
- Critical thinking
- Experience
- Cross-cultural awareness
- Confidence and personalities

What I do

Teaching and doing research at the Department of Tourism, Chiang Mai University. The subjects that I teach include:

Religious and local wisdom for tourism
Cultural tourism
Tourism Planning
Tourism impacts and management

Skills I use and how I developed them

Research skills
- Lecturers cannot stop studying. We need to keep an eye on current issues in the field that we teach and also other relevant fields. We need to take the initiative in every possible aspects, know how to raise a research question, decide the methodology and make a discussion as well as use this piece of work to contribute something to the wider public (this is the part that the sponsors look for).

Communication and interpersonal skills
- Lecturers must be able to transfer information to students. Yes, that's the basic job and we need to encourage to think about this information critically.

Those skills can be developed through participation in classes as well as through internship and other extracurricular activities.

What I like most

I get to meet new people (students) every year. They also teach me how to deal with all sorts of people and to respect others.

It's such a great moment to see one of a student who generally sat in the corner of the room become a grown-up and mature person and finally get a job.

What I like least

Bureaucratic nature of the organisation.
