A day in the life of a Communications Manager, Antarctica in the United Kingdom

How I looked for work

I saw an advert in a trade journal, quite by chance.

What I do

This was an unusual job: looking after IT and communications systems on a research station in Antarctica. It involved spending 18 months living in Antarctica with no visits home during that time!

Skills I use and how I developed them

A very multiskilled role: teamwork, self-reliance, problem solving, diplomacy, managing stressful situations, prioritisation, working with people from lots of different backgrounds. I owe a lot of my skills development for this role to my time at York, particularly the time I spent involved in university societies, especially YSTV.
