My advice about working in my industry
There are so many so-called IT experts out there, it's a very crowded market and you need to be different as well as good to survive.
What I do
As director of my own business, I was responsible for all day-to-day aspects of running the business, including accounts, payroll, marketing and operations.
How I started my business
I took over some of the customer base from my former employer when their parent company went bust in the financial crash of 2008. I then grew the business through word of mouth.
What inspired me
The desire to manage my own time, take responsibility and action
Skills I use and how I developed them
Time management - I used to be hopeless but had to become much more disciplined very quickly, especially once I had a family of my own.
What I like most
I liked the flexibility to work when and where I wanted, within reason.
What I like least
Being on call 24/7, even while supposedly on holiday
What surprised me most
I never had to advertise, all of my work was either word of mouth or repeat custom.
