A day in the life of a Social Media Team Leader in Belgium

How I looked for work

I joined the Communication unit as a press officer (which required mainly good English and the patience of an angel) and then gradually moved towards social media. I have picked up the social media skills on the job and gradually expanded our social media activities until a team had been established organically.

What I do

Social media team leader, European Commission

Skills I use and how I developed them

Communication skills are of course important - "story telling" and drafting - but above all I rely on people skills to do my job, both for coaching my team and for managing the work flows with colleagues in other units.

What I like most

Working in social media the feedback on your work is instant and there is lots of scope to be creative and frame messages in different ways. I work on youth, education (the Erasmus programme) and culture and genuinely believe that my work is important and that it will contribute to increased cultural understanding in Europe. I also greatly enjoy managing a team, and the more strategic work that you can do as a manager.

What I like least

Good communication is not always compatible with the working culture of the Commission and sometimes I get a bit frustrated about having the same argument all over again!

What surprised me most

Just how creative and independent you can be in the Commission - once you have figured out the rules.
