A day in the life of a Research Associate in India

How I found out about the job

Personal contacts

The recruitment process

I emailed the organisation and scheduled an interview with the Director of the organisation and had an informal interview, on the last day of August 2010. I was told that there were no available projects at the present time. However, I was called back the next day and given a project to work on immediately!

Where I hope to be in 5 years

Keep doing projects that are more engaging and building my skills. I have not yet reached a stage where I am sure I want to focus on one particular narrow field, so would like to continue to broaden my horizons within the larger field of Industrial Ecology.

My advice to students considering work

It depends upon the specific job or career you are looking to pursue. Make sure you are proficient in all the computer based skills you would require, as these can set you apart when it comes to time required to learn them on a job. Stay updated with all the current news and issues. The sector is only expanding now, so there is a lot that can be done, and many areas you can focus on.

My advice about working in my industry

Stay updated with all the current news and issues. The sector is only expanding now, so there is a lot that can be done, and many areas you can focus on.

What I do

I work for an organisation that primarily focusses on Industrial Ecology. We use concepts and tools of industrial ecology to recommend and promote strategies for sustainable management of critical resources. Our main activities are research and outreach for industrial ecology in developing countries.
We aim to help enable societies to optimally utilize resources (land, energy, water, food, industrial materials, knowledge, social capital, tradition etc.) so that environmental costs are minimized and social and economic benefits are maximized.

I have over the past few years been focussing more on projects relating to indoor and outdoor air pollution in India. I have been the Project Manager for a couple of large-scale field-measurement projects in collaboration with the University of Minnesota.

Skills I use and how I developed them

The MSc. in Green Chemistry and Industrial Ecology gave me a great base and an upper hand in securing this job. I feel all of it definitely helped me get the job and perform well at it.

Extracurricular skills:
Some specific tools of MFA, Statistical modelling etc., that I have had to pick up along the way for the job. I just figured how to use them as I needed them.

What I like most

The opportunity to be able to meet with a range of experts in the field and also work with colleagues from universities across the world! The energy and learning that comes out of working on a range of projects with a range of very brilliant minds! Working crazy hours, working hard, and facing challenges I've never had to before..and things I wouldn't have imagined I could do.

What I like least

I don't like equipment down-time due to breakdown!

What would I change? At this point, there is not much I'd want to change.
