I got all the jobs through CWjobs.co.uk. Monster and Jobserve are some other sites which will be helpful in finding the right jobs.

I applied for all these jobs online and sent them my a copy of my CV and a covering letter.

My career history

On completing my degree I have worked as a Desktop Support Engineer, London; IT Analyst for Lloyds Banking Group, Leeds; and now as a Technical support Engineer for a global company CBRE, London.

MCP, CCNA

Where I hope to be in 5 years

I am positive I will be specialising as a Network Engineer and I see a bright future ahead.

My advice to students considering work

Enjoy your stay at york. Enjoy the place, York is a very beautiful place which I still miss even now. While you start studying at the University, make sure you think of where you want to go from here. If your career path requires certification then I believe you should pursue it as it will increase the chances of your employment once you graduate.

If you are in doubt about anything speak to your supervisor/senior students and anyone that can guide you through.

My advice about working in my industry

Just keep looking at the job market and and apply for the right job at the right time.

What I do

I work as a part of a technical team providing 3rd Line IT support for all the CBRE Employees based in EMEA countries. I also work on various projects in migrating users to VMware. I also had to give onsite support for users based in Warsaw, Poland.

Skills I use and how I developed them

The degree does help to understand the basics of certain technologies to an extent, but I believe you need to put in extra effort updating your skills outside the University.

Degree skills:
Good understanding of networking and working effectively as part of a team.

Extracurricular skills:
I learnt so many Microsoft technologies outside my academic study. I used to have a virtual server and work on AD and Exchange as well.

There are plenty of useful learning materials on the Internet. Since I can't concentrate on reading books I just relied on several videos CBT Nuggets, train signal to learn about new technologies/certification.

What I like most

I work with a group of extrovert and fun loving colleagues who specialise in what they do. My current job doesn't involve much pressure. Also I enjoy the fact that I learn new technologies.

What I like least

Some of the access to certain technologies is restricted and is only available to senior technical support analyst.
