A day in the life of a Recruitment Consultant in the United Kingdom
My career history
I am currently working in London specialising in recruiting HR Professionals into the Banking sector. I am working on a strong basic salary and a good overall commission structure. I have been here for exactly two years now after taking nine months out after graduating to go back to Malawi where I grew up.
My advice to students considering work
Soak up as much information as possible, get all the magazines, go to the Careers Service, go to ALL the careers fairs, get on LinkedIn, join groups you're interested in and get involved in the discussion, get some advice on your CV before sending it out. And dont worry about what you're friends are doing. This is the time you need to be the most selfish!
My advice about working in my industry
Get as many interviews under your belt as possible, so you'll start to learn how to sell yourself.
What I do
My role involves business development, cold-calling clients, calling candidates qualifying for jobs, sending out CVs, advising on CVs, advising on market conditions, writing adverts, head hunting, networking, arranging interviews, passing on feedback, working on interview techniques, strategising, building my own personal market.
Skills I use and how I developed them
The degree meant a natural level of interest, but I don't think it matters what degree you do, as long as you're passionate about something.
Degree skills:
Dealing with different/difficult people. We've all been in positions at university where our hard work in a team carries some of the other team members, and that doesn't change as you go through your career! You are better prepared to deal with this and move on.
Extracurricular skills:
Leadership skills from being the president of the University of York Women's Rugby Time. General hardworking attitude from keeping myself earning through university!
What I like most
The money is great, and so are the incentives! I have been on three incentive holidays so far on the company's expense to Barcelona, Marbella and Ibiza. There is a "work hard play hard" environment with brilliant financial rewards for the people who really want it.
What I like least
It can be repetitive, and you have to get used to being told 'no' over 100 times a week!
