My advice to students considering work
Do not be afraid to change your course if you do not like it; in hindsight, a course like Maths/Physics or Maths/language would have been a far better option for me to take and it would not have required much catch-up work either, given that credit for joint-courses can be split into whatever ratio you choose.
I would also say that beginning your use of the Careers Service early on is a good idea. Sometimes, deciding what you want to do is not immediately obvious, and going through the material they have for you may just take you down a path you find that you like.
My advice about working in my industry
For the USA: Get a LinkedIn profile and maintain it well. Remember that the USA is a LOT bigger than the UK and there are many more people that want the same job as you. Networking may seem like a cliche but the traditional route of sending out a CV and getting invited to an interview is rapidly becoming a waste of time there. Try and see if you have friends there that can offer a helping hand. Knowlege of Spanish is highly recommended.
For anywhere else: Be sure to visit your target area before applying there. There is no point having your dream job if you suddenly hate it all when you step out of work. The ability to live in that country and get on with the locals is of huge importance and should not be underestimated. Read up about the culture there and start learning the local language. There is no substitute for acceptance.
What I do
I manage all the ICT systems for our company, including but not limited to computers (we run mainly MACs), our internal server, our VOIP telephones and the wireless network.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Mathematics was probably a bad course for me to do as a major because I did not realize how much theory was involved. As a result, I did not take much interest in it and did not do as well as I should have. However, I did further develop my mental mathematic skills and these greatly helped later down the line when I worked in accounting and finance.
Degree skills:
My skills in handling figures. Things that others struggled with became second nature for me and saved a lot of time especially when there were time constraints in place.
What I like most
The fact that I have so much responsibility despite this being a temporary job (I am here on post-study OPT only). Our staff operate out of four locations across the USA and the skills that I have acquired as a result of keeping all our systems working have been absolutely invaluable to me.
What I like least
The fact that I have to do nearly everything and that certain suggestions are oftentimes ignored entirely, even when they make the most logistical sense.
