How I looked for postgraduate options

What helped secure my place:
Laboratory skills and experience during my year in industry. Plus having a friend already working in the lab was a big help!

How I developed skills that helped:
Year in industry proved to be very beneficial

Skills which have helped on my course:
Knowledge of how a lab functions and learning many technical laboratory skills

How I found out about the postgraduate place

Personal contacts

The application process

Very informal, the laboratory was recommended to me by a friend and I sent the PI my CV and later spoke to him on the phone and was offered the PhD position

Why I continued studying

Improve my employability and skills in the laboratory. Also to be able to research further into cancer biology

What my course is like

Good lab facilities and friendly atmosphere with seminars available to go to and plenty of support networks.

How I have funded my studies

Funded by the BBSRC and University of Nottingham

Where I hope to be in 5 years

Plans after I finish my course:
Maybe do a post doc but it depends on the job climate

My advice to students considering further study

Talk to people who work in the lab you are applying to and make sure you will get on with them as 4 years is a long time!

Other advice

One thing I would change:
Choose a different supervisor but in the same lab
