A day in the life of a Auditor & Forensic Accountant in the United Kingdom
My career history
I spent a gap year travelling, and my employment has been with KPMG in London. I started in Audit, and have been seconded to Forensic advisory. I am studying for ACA.
Where I hope to be in 5 years
I want to qualify then decide what I want to do - anything is possible.
My advice to students considering work
Get relevant work experience! It is a must - there is no-one I work with that did not have some relevant work experience. Even unpaid work experience is favoured. The level of degree is not as important as impressing your employer with your personality and commitment.
What I do
There is no standard day to day job here. I could be at a client's site, in the office, in college or doing a training course. I started in audit in a department specialising in information, communication and entertainment but have had a broad experience, working with military, leisure, tourism and financial clients, as well as performing non audit work such as investigations, proposals and presentations. I have recently joined the forensic advisory department based in fraud, investigations and compliance.
Skills I use and how I developed them
I had work experience, internships, and an active interest in the career.
What I like most
I enjoy the variety and the fact that no two days are ever the same so you don't get bored.
What I like least
I don't enjoy the days so much when you aren't busy or are too busy. Occasionally it goes from one extreme to the other.
What would I change? The exams are harder than my degree!
