A day in the life of a Senior Associate in the United Kingdom

How I found out about the job

National press

The recruitment process

I applied straight after leaving University; I completed an online application form, numerical and verbal tests, an interview and an assessment centre, the entire process was carried out in about a fortnight.

My career history

After leaving York I joined PwC on their generalist assurance graduate scheme in Southampton. The scheme has a three year duration and is split between studying towards a professional accountancy qualification and spending time at client locations working on audit and non-audit assurance engagements.

I have now relocated to London and work in the Capital Markets, Accounting Advisory and Structuring department which provides advice to clients over a variety of issues including stock market listings, refinancings, acquisitions, disposals and other complex transactions.

Where I hope to be in 5 years

For the medium term I am very settled and see a well defined career path in practice. Once qualified, there is a vast array of external opportunities so you are by no means tied into practice accountancy for life.

What I do

I work exclusively within the structuring services division of PwC. As a relatively junior team member I am responsible for much of the groundwork required for preparing technical reports. The work is thought-provoking and requires an analytical mind; the role involves juggling a number of projects at any one time and as the work is transaction based, volumes fluctuate.

Skills I use and how I developed them

Degree skills:
At a high level, the numeracy and report writing skills have helped however there are no prerequisites when moving into accountancy and all technical knowledge will generally be provided by your employer.

Extracurricular skills:
During my time at York I played a lot of sport and did a fair bit of volunteering. Both activities provided me with plenty to talk about at interviews and helped me to develop interpersonal skills which are vital for any client facing role.

What I like most

I enjoy working in a team of equally ambitious and motivated individuals and the wide variety of transactions which I am able to work on.

What I like least

As the work is transaction based, hours can be long with little or no advance warning.
