A day in the life of a Annual Fund Officer in the United Kingdom

How I found out about the job

The recruitment process

The recruitment process was an online application form followed by interview including presentation and computer test.

My career history

2003-2004, Gap year volunteer, Christian Aid, Oxford; 2004-2008, Volunteer Development Officer, Christian Aid, Oxford; 2008, Church and Community Appeals Officer, Christian Aid, London; 2008, Unit Manager, Christian Aid, Oxford; 2009-2010 Programme Co-ordinator, Iona Community, Isle of Iona.

My advice to students considering work

Volunteer! There are loads of opportunities, both for regular commitments and one-off projects. They can help you pin down what you're good at and what you want to do, as well as excluding things that you find you don't want to pursue. And you'll be helping people at the same time.

What I do

I raise money for student support, bursaries, and clubs & societies at the University of York. Primarily this is done through twice-yearly telephone campaigns, where 25 student callers talk to alumni. I train and manage the student callers, organise mail and email communications with alumni, make sure people are thanked appropriately, and I keep learning.

Skills I use and how I developed them

I had experience in communications, fundraising and managing people.

Degree skills:
Analysing information and communicating are key parts of a History degree and of my current job.

Extracurricular skills:
I volunteered with YSIS (then known as STP), which helped in understanding people and communicating.
I was involved in societies and took on committee roles, including secretary and events rep, which developed my organisational skills.

What I like most

I enjoy working with students and helping them to learn and develop.
