My advice to students considering work

My advice to students would be to start thinking about your chosen career early and start building your work experience early. It's a very competitive marketplace for new graduates so the ones who have taken time to build work-related skills outside their course will fare better.

What I do

My role is to plan and implement the marketing strategy for our commercial law publications and products. This in a nutshell is what I do, although it covers a wide variety of tasks and activities. A large part of my job is spent planning: planning our annual budget expenditure, planning individual direct mail campaigns, planning e-marketing promotions, planning presentations to sales reps and agents who sell our products in the UK, Europe and across the world, planning and attending conferences where we sell our products. I also manage an Assistant Marketing Manager and contribute to department wide marketing initiatives such as improvement programmes.

Skills I use and how I developed them

MA in Publishing; Work experience placements at a variety of publishers (5);
Over 1 year's experience of bookselling.

Degree skills:
I think the thinking skills my course helped me to develop have helped me in my role. Being able to arrive at an independently thought-through argument, and being able to argue it, is a valuable skill to have in publishing.

Extracurricular skills:
Doing the Masters in Publishing helped demonstrate my commitment to a career in that industry, and gave me more publishing-specific skills. Also working in publishers and booksellers have provided a useful knowledge of the book industry which helped in getting a job.

What I like most

The variety of working in a marketing role is very attractive, and means that it is rare that any day is the same. Marketing is also a creative activity and this part is also enjoyable (e.g. coming up with new ideas and concepts for promotions and campaigns)
