My advice to students considering work
As a recruiter I look for three things in rank order: enthusiasm, commitment to hard work, specific skills. Of the three, the first two are by far the most important.
What I do
I am a Co-Edition Publisher of illustrated non-fiction in charge of the 'Marshall Editions' imprint at Quarto. We conceive new book ideas and sell them to English language publishers across the globe such as Readers Digest, Scholastic and Harper Collins. Once the concepts are sold we design, write and print the books. We operate in both the children's and adult's markets.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Degree skills:
The single most practical skill I learnt as a undergraduate was a mastery of Excel. The general skills of work discipline and deadlines were the next most useful.
Extracurricular skills:
I was the Editor of Nouse for 18 months which allowed me to learn DTP and some aspects of managing the creative process.
What I like most
I enjoy the freedom to conceive new ideas.
What I like least
The current state of the global book business.
What would I change? I would probably have not spent so long at one company.
