A day in the life of a National Audit Programme Manager in the United Kingdom

How I found out about the job

National press

The recruitment process

I applied through an advert in the Guardian newspaper using a CV and covering letter. I was then given a first interview followed a few weeks later by a second where I was also required to give a formal presentation.

My career history

Researcher to an MP - 1998;
Charity Support Advisor at Charity Commission - 1998 - 1999;
Conference Producer (Central Government) at CAPITA - 1999 - 2002;
Project Manager at Research Information Service - 2002 - 2004.

Courses taken since graduation

PRINCE II

Where I hope to be in 5 years

I would like to move to a larger charity and manage a larger number of junior managers.

My advice to students considering work

Competition for jobs is very high so do whatever you can to stand out. Get involved with a Society or your JCRC so that you have something extra to add to your CV. During the long summer break, try to do some voluntary work in an area that you want to break into. I did this between my first and second years and even now people comment on that early commitment. I regularly recruit staff now and would certainly be very keen to interview people who had managed to do some work experience in their chosen field.

What I do

I manage staff, a programme of national hospital audits (led by individual managers) and play a role in the overall management of the charity.

Skills I use and how I developed them

Project and people management skills.

Degree skills:
The writing and presenting skills I gained at York have been invaluable.

Extracurricular skills:
While I at York I was a Social Secretary for a year on the Derwent JCRC - this was very useful for my CV and later, when I applied for an events role, absolutely essential!

What I like most

I enjoy managing staff and making decisions.

What I like least

The minutiae of the datasets we deal with!

What would I change? I would have liked to have been working for a charity with more front line customer contact, perhaps a charity for older people.
