A day in the life of a Talent Acquisiton Coordinator in the United Kingdom

How I found out about the job

Headhunted by company

The recruitment process

I was headhunted for the role because of my experience and degree. I had 4 interviews and was offered the position within the space of a week.

My career history

I initally worked in audit straight after university for a year. I managed to secure an HR position with Morgan Stanley and then was headhunted by Credit Suisse

Courses taken since graduation

MA in Human Resources Management

Where I hope to be in 5 years

My aim is to get experience in other aspects of HR, become an HR generalist in the next 5 years and then work my way up to be an HR Business Partner or an HR Director.

My advice to students considering work

Make sure you gain these transferable skills by joining societies and clubs - those experiences and skills are what will set you apart. Make sure you get as much help with CV and covering letter writing as possible - you will not get an interview no matter how qualified you are if your CV is bad. Get as much public speaking/ presenting experience as possible - it builds confidence for interviews and assessment centres.

My advice about working in my industry

Make sure you keep up with relevant topics in whatever sector you want to go into - interest and passion is almost as important as technical ability.

What I do

I handle the recruitment process from start to finish. I headhunt candidates, organise interviews, conduct interviews and assessment centre, screen applications, organise travel, generate offers and contracts, etc. I also organise networking events and conduct projects in topics such as agile working, diversity and internal mobility. I handle recruitment for Fixed Income and Asset Management.

Skills I use and how I developed them

Extracurricular skills:
Communication and leadership have been useful. I developed these doing Fusion and playing basketball for the university. Working with a group of very different people at York improved the way I communicate in a professional setting. My time management has also been improved just by being involved in so many clubs and keeping on top of my academic study - especially in my 3rd and 4th year when I also had a part time job. Time management, multi tasking and prioritising work is at the core of what I do.

What I like most

I like having direct contact with different parts of the business and getting to liaise with candidates. I get direct exposure to the business as I have to liaise with Directors and Managing Directors.

What I like least

There can be a lot of admin work involved.
