A day in the life of a Relationship Manager in China

The recruitment process

Online application, verbal test, telephone interview, face to face, interview, assessment center (group interview) and finally a line manager interview.

My advice to students considering work

Make plans as early as possible. The majority recruiting events are in the third quarter of the year while some students have not finished their courses. My suggestion is to prepare at least 6 month earlier.

My advice about working in my industry

What I do

The management trainee program in HSBC China is a two year comprehensive training scheme. In the program, trainee will assign to different positions in various locations which offers intensive exposure of the banking industry in China. By completing the program, qualified candidates could choose to join a local branch as relationship manager or product sales manager.

What I like most

In the training program, it is the exposure I obtained that I value the most as normal staff could not have this kind of experience in such a short period. As a relationship manager as I am doing now, we face all kinds of challenges every day and we have to drive a task from nothing to success. No task could be accomplished without the platform HSBC provides. By facing all kinds of companies directly, we do not know about the economy from newspaper but from the live experience itself.

What I like least

Mobility is a part that offers opportunity as well as challenges at the same time. If one wishes to stay close to family but have to work far away, this might be a problem. The balance between the reality and the wanted life is difficult.
