A day in the life of a National Management Trainee (NGDP) in the United Kingdom

I can see how what I’m working on has a tangible impact on the community I work in.

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

I work for a London Borough council as part of the NGDP graduate scheme. This is a 2 year programme run by the LGA where I will receive a level 7 qualification in Leadership and Management.

What do you do?

Currently my placement is with the Climate Action team. I work on a broad range of project to help reduce emissions and improve air quality in the borough.

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

I wanted to work in public or charity sector and chose local government because of how close you are to making change. I can see how what I’m working on has a tangible impact on the community I work in.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

No

Describe your most memorable day at work

I had the opportunity to take the leader of the council round to meet some of the businesses we had been helping to make climate action plans. Hearing from businesses themselves how the scheme had helped them and what their plans were for the future was really great and made my work seem worthwhile. The majority of these were local family run businesses that without the financial support and technical assistance our scheme offers would not have been making the progress they have.

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

I volunteered with the social media for a climate NGO.

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Do your research into graduate schemes and jobs in the area you want to work and take the time to prepare for interviews. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and try not to get disheartened with rejctectilns. They happen to us all but you will get there!
