Programme Director and Biology Educator
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
Flexibility with work, using my degree knowledge, people-oriented industry, making a positive difference to the world.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
Not sure - never really had firm plans of my career trajectory.
Describe your most memorable day at work
Creating a well attended revision course - through well executed marketing, designing a website to showcase the course and then communicating clearly with staff so they are aware of their classes. After delivering the course, receiving very positive feedback of the positive impact it had on their learning of their GCSEs and A Levels.
Are there any challenges associated with your job?
Absolutely - discipline is the main one. Working from home in a very small organization means you have to be very self-motivated and focused every day. It is easy to drift.
What’s your work environment and culture like?
Mixed. I can work whenever - which I enjoy for the flexibility - but then boundaries are very difficult.
Our team is small and we would like to get more students, so sometimes the culture is one of frustration. Most the time, however, it is excitement and opportunity.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
Christian Union, Biosciences Society, Chess Club, Running Club.
People skills, organization skills (especially organizing events), time-management, self-motivation.
What would you like to do next with your career?
Develop an asynchronous technology-infused online programme to help school students.
Or also build up the brand internationally.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Communication, creativity, confidence and collaboration. How are you developing these 4Cs.
Being agile to adapt to a changing work environment.
What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?
Any! Career, athletics, skiing, relationships, family, living overseas, money management, mortgages. Very varied.
Is there anything else you’d like to tell us?
Currently living in York for any face to face engagements.
