A day in the life of a Student Success Tutor in the United Kingdom

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

Elizabeth School of London provides fountain year and undergraduate courses in Business, Health and Social Care, Computing and more for typically working class and non-native English speaking students in major cities across the UK.

What do you do?

I work with the academic team to maintain retention and progression within the program by holding workshops, working one on one with students to submit their assessments, and responding to important emails and phone inquiries.

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

During my undergrad and at the University of York, I worked as a peer mentor to help advise my fellow students in their well-being and course. I enjoy working in educational settings as there are always things to learn.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

Yes and no. Everyone hopes they'll do something in their degree area, but sometimes you'll have other interests as well!

Describe your most memorable day at work

The first time we held an assessment clinic to help a new group of students, we had really high engagement and attendance at the event and were able to help lots of students to submit their assessments confidently. I felt good about my work and my ability to make an impact.

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

The biggest thing I was involved with was working as a College Life Advisor for James College. This gave me experiences in event management, social media, and advising students.

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Spending a lot of time writing your CV and using the provided templates and resources makes a huge difference when applying. You can tailor your CV to specific opportunities, but it's so much easier when you have a solid foundation.
