A day in the life of a Commercial Banking Analyst in the United Kingdom

Use your alumni network - we completed these applications far more recently than the Careers Department.

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

Lloyds Bank

What do you do?

I work within the Commercial Bank, supporting our corporate clients with their everyday business banking needs. Clients typically have revenues of over £100m a year.

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

I've always been interested in current affairs and the markets, so I thought that I may as well be paid to look into and learn the things that I love!

I have completed work experience for a variety of investment and commercial banks, insurers and financial advisory firms, so happy to offer advice on the roles, or application process for any of these.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

When graduating, I was open to anything within the Financial Services sector.

Describe your most memorable day at work

Fighting tight deadlines to help complete debt deals for some of the leading UK corporate brands, and getting some great exposure early on in my career.

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

Griff Investment Fund, Investment & Finance Society.

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Apply early - many firms suggest that applications are accepted on a rolling basis which is true, but there will be fewer roles remaining for a high volume of applications if you wait. Additionally, use your alumni network - we completed these applications far more recently than the Careers Department.

What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?

General career and application advice, particularly in Financial Services related roles. I'll be honest with my views and I will try to tell you what you would be good at.
