A day in the life of a Service Management Practitioner in the United Kingdom

If you feel doors keep closing in your face, I can guarantee there IS another door nearby which might just be the one.

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

NHS Digital

What do you do?

Support various healthcare services - data security; clinical coding, cancer screening IT systems

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

My current role is the result of experience gained in previous jobs in commercial and non-commercial fields.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

My 2nd degree was an MSC in Information Processing; there are some links to that in my current role

Describe your most memorable day at work

That's a hard one. But I LOVE my job. Good colleagues and a sense of satisfaction in working in a healthcare / social care IT setting

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

Hmmm hard to answer....

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Try and gain as much experience in as many different sectors as possible.
If applying for a role, take your time and really focus on what they want, not what you think they want. Match their needs with your skills and experience and provide actual evidence.

Customise every application - don't just produce your generic application every time

Happy to help with job queries as I was out of work when the training sector was badly hit after the financial crisis 2008 and following. I turned job application into an art form.

What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?

Any

Is there anything else you’d like to tell us?

If you feel doors keep closing in your face, I can guarantee there IS another door nearby which might just be the one.

In any career situation there are always other, perhaps unexpected, options you can create.
