A day in the life of a Executive Director of NGO in Armenia

This job is exactly what I had in mind when I graduated, and I'm happy to say that I felt confident to assume this role because my programme had instilled in me the skills and knowledge necessary to do this.

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

Hub Artsakh is a non-governmental organization based in Nagorno-Karabakh. Our mission is to promote the post-war recovery and development of Nagorno Karabakh through the development of social entrerpreneurship.

What do you do?

My role focuses consists of two main components: running the co-working space that we offer, and managing the programs that we run (including fundraising, grant-writing, financial management, and more).

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

My time at the University of York prepared me fully to take on this role. Previously, I worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia, but I realized I enjoy being on the field and I prefer a more dynamic and challenging role.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

This job is exactly what I had in mind when I graduated, and I'm happy to say that I felt confident to assume this role because my programme had instilled in me the skills and knowledge necessary to do this.

Describe your most memorable day at work

The most memorable day was opening our co-working space and officially becoming operational.

Are there any challenges associated with your job?

Working in a post-war context is challenging in terms of security, safety, and the stress caused by the volatile situation.

What’s your work environment and culture like?

We believe in a friendly, collaborative work environment and culture where we help lift each other up.

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

Unfortunately, I did not have enough time to take on any extracurricular activities during my time at university, since I was a Masters student.

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Be confident, patient, and determined, and you will land the role you want, but at the same time, make sure you are flexible and willing to adapt, otherwise you might miss opportunities.
