A day in the life of a Management Consultant in the United Kingdom

Make the most of any opportunity that comes your way. Even if it doesn’t fit your exact plans.

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

We help public service leaders produce lasting, positive change in complex systems. Our approach enables organisations to make the required mindset shift – towards a focus on outcomes and working across organisational and system boundaries – and provides the tools that make this easier.

What do you do?

Help public sector organisations improve outcomes for service users

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

I focussed my undergrad dissertation on hazardous waste management, which led me to my first role working for a Defra funded project hosted by a consultancy firm. From here I worked with many local authorities and trained as a management consultant. I have now worked with many district and county councils in all different service areas, from waste and environment, to regulatory services, planning and building control and social care.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

Yes; I thought I would end up working in a private company. I hadn’t even considered public sector.

Describe your most memorable day at work

I spoke at a conference within the Houses of Parliament - it was fantastic place to visit in an official capacity

Are there any challenges associated with your job?

I often have to travel for work and be away from home for long periods of time.

What’s your work environment and culture like?

It’s competitive but full of friendly rivalry and continuous support.

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

Lots of pub crawls! But seriously, though socials like this, I learnt solid communication skills and developed self confidence

What would you like to do next with your career?

I would like to become the director of a consultancy company or within a local authority

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Make the most of any opportunity that comes your way. Even if it doesn’t fit your exact plans.

What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?

Anything

Is there anything else you’d like to tell us?

I graduated during a global economic crisis - the current pandemic will pass and things will get easier.
