A day in the life of a Software Engineer in the United Kingdom

Make things. Any things. Just find joy in writing code, and then do it.

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

We make financial software (but we're not boring)

What do you do?

I write code to produce enterprise financial software.

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

I like to solve problems, and there's no industry quite like software, where you get to solve problems all day long.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

I wanted to go into finance (accounting, banking, etc.). I could not be happier with my decision to abandon that path.

Describe your most memorable day at work

On my first day I got a brand new mac book pro, that was pretty great

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

I wrote some code in my spare time, and I didn't do that much else relevant. I really wish I could have discovered coding before my final year.

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Make things. Any things. Just find joy in writing code, and then do it. More specifically, learn Git, and publish your projects on GitHub. In this industry, you don't need industry experience, you can create your own experience, so absolutely take advantage of that! If you think you're not good enough, or not at that level yet, you're wrong. Any activity translates really well to your prospective employers.

What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?

Anything!

Is there anything else you’d like to tell us?

I'm friendly, reach out and ask me stuff, I'll be honest and nice
