A day in the life of a Maths Teacher in the United Kingdom

I wanted the opportunity to share my love of maths in the hope of inspiring future mathematicians.

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

I am the Numeracy Coordinator at a school in Scarborough. The school is part of a Multi Academy Trust.

What do you do?

I am responsible for whole-school numeracy and I teach maths.

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

I wanted the opportunity to share my love of maths in the hope of inspiring future mathematicians.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

No - I planned to go into teaching from the age of 17.

Describe your most memorable day at work

We put on an awards event for Y7 students and their parents to celebrate their achievements. It was great to see so many parents celebrating maths.

Are there any challenges associated with your job?

The main challenges are related to workload. There are things I can do to reduce this, such as being organised. But often things come up that take priority.

What’s your work environment and culture like?

We are proud of our school and proud to represent the community.

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

I took part in YSIS (York Students in Schools) which gave me the opportunity to get some experience in schools. This helped to confirm my choice to become a teacher, and helped me gain some knowledge for my PGCE application.

What would you like to do next with your career?

I'm hoping to go on to become a head of department and would one day like to be a deputy responsible for teaching and learning.

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Take every opportunity and believe in yourself.

What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?

Anything to do with teaching or leadership (which is something I have been working on)
