A day in the life of a Intensive Care Nurse in the United Kingdom

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

Acute hospital NHS trust

What do you do?

Critical care specialist trained but mostly work in the operating theatres recovery room now. Currently drafted back into ICU to assist care of critical covid19 patients.

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

Seeking an essential, secure, technically skilled public sector role.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

Absolutely not. Actually did an MA in industrial relations afterwards to help me better understand the employment market and take a welcome break from job hunting.

Describe your most memorable day at work

Caring for critically ill colleagues with Covid19

Are there any challenges associated with your job?

Fatigue, physical strain, night shifts, hostile and sometimes corrupt management.

What’s your work environment and culture like?

Highly sociable and caring on the shop floor, often contemptuous at organisational level.

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

None. With hindsight I wish I'd done some languages and publishing.

What would you like to do next with your career?

I'm probably going to stick with this until I retire.

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Make sure you fully understand the unsentimental nature of the labour market, that it does not exist to cater to your 'dreams' and that the playing field is not level. That said, a passionate interest is always a marketable advantage.

What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?

Anything about working for the NHS and in nursing.

Is there anything else you’d like to tell us?

Not yet :)
