A day in the life of a Senior Consultant in the United Kingdom
I have done lots of different jobs over the last 20 years but recently decided to go back to my programming roots.
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
SYSTRA Ltd is part of the SYSTRA Group, a global company with a 60-year history of improving transport systems throughout the world.
What do you do?
I am a computer programmer responsible for developing transport modelling software.
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
I have done lots of different jobs over the last 20 years but recently decided to go back to my programming roots. I was managing technical projects for SYSTRA but when a job came up in the development team then I decided to move internally.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
Yes, but I have done a lot of other jobs in the meantime.
Describe your most memorable day at work
Every day is memorable.
Are there any challenges associated with your job?
All my team work in different offices so we need to be good at communicating. Also the software we develop is quite complex so it can sometimes be a challenge to work out how to do things.
What’s your work environment and culture like?
It's a great place to work. Everyone is really friendly and we all just get on with the job.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
I volunteered for Nightline and it made me a much better listener.
What would you like to do next with your career?
I'm happy just as I am. Career advancement can be overrated.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Build your networks. Don't be afraid to apply for jobs if you really want them. Talk to as many people as possible about what they do. Think about what transferrable skills you have.
What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?
Pretty much anything really.
