Briefly describe the organisation you work for

Crowd Analyzer: We are specialized in monitoring, analyzing, and reporting online and offline media content.
American University in Cario: One of the most elite universities worldwide.

What do you do?

Fulltime: director of the research department at Crowd Analyzer. My job is to make sure of three things mainly:
1- Hiring and training the right social media researchers.
2- Creating and maintaining the right research process including quality.
3- Setting and monitoring the right research vision.

Parttime: Teaching Assistant at the American University in Cairo. My job is to:
1- Teach social media analytics tools.
2- Set quizzes and assignments and grade them.
3- Help students to learn and discover more.

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

It starts with a passion for social media in general. I was the admin of many online initiative during my undergraduate studies back in 2008 when social media was not so popular. I loved it. The turnover happened really after my MSc at the University of York. My degree was a combination of Sociology and Computer Science which was perfect.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

No. It is very similar to the original plan.

Describe your most memorable day at work

Meeting with team and making sure they are highly qualified to lead. The feeling I have when we close a VAS deal with a positive feedback is amazing. I really appreciate the ability to really empower our clients and to hear the appreciation after proving an analytical report that boosted their efforts.

Are there any challenges associated with your job?

Of course, you need to have great communication skills. You are connecting business with marketing and research. Sometimes, you even involve engineers in order to meet a newly discovered need.

What’s your work environment and culture like?

We work in an office in Maadi, Cairo. Recently we have purchased this building where every department has its own floor! The environment is very cozy as a startup should be. It has been a month since we are working from home handling the COVID situation.

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

I was very active despite being an international student for 1 year only. I was:
- the communities, charities, and volunteering officer for the GSA.
- Wentworth D4 building representative.
- team member for the University of York football team D3 and D2.

The memories I had and the cultural experiences are priceless. You should never miss opportunities to mingle!

What would you like to do next with your career?

Start my own research business or help other startups to prosper.

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

I know you heard this a lot but soft skills such as communication, presentation, time management, etc are super essential. I can teach you how to code, do research, manage a project, but I can't teach you how to communicate or listen. Being able to work in a team and give and receive feedback is important as much as your technical skills.

What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?

If you want to know more about social media listening, monitoring, or marketing, make sure to contact me.

Is there anything else you’d like to tell us?

Enjoy it! I know it looks difficult now, but it is worth it! I have been there :).
