A day in the life of a University lecturer in Norway

Put serious thought into what your dream job is, as there is no point in aiming for a job you won't like.

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

Østfold University College is a public higher education institution in the south east of Norway, close to the Swedish border. ØUC has approx. 100 study programs, ranging from BA to PhD, and just north of 7000 students.

What do you do?

I teach, do research and act as coordinator for our English in teacher ed. courses.

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

1) My love for languages. I always knew, or hoped, that I would work with English somehow - I just didn't know how.
2) I kept in touch with my old professors and waited for an opportunity.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

Yes, but actually no. I never guessed that I would end up teaching, but boy am I glad that I did.

Describe your most memorable day at work

Every 1st day of teaching in the new academic year, with a new group of students, is memorable and super fun!

Are there any challenges associated with your job?

Oh yes. Let's not go into that here... Seriously though, working in academia can be a lonely job, as you work alone much of the time, and you need to a healthy dose of self-discipline.

What’s your work environment and culture like?

Working at a university is a dream come true, as the environment is multicultural, international and hectic.

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

Outside of my studies I spent A LOT if time with my new college friends at Goodricke, and just tried to enjoy being an international student as much as possible. That'll be my top tip, as these are friends you can keep for life.

What would you like to do next with your career?

Pursue a part-time PhD in tandem with my teaching and research.

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Put serious thought into what your dream job is, as there is no point in aiming for a job you won't like. Then, try to think of jobs which can offer similar experiences - and you'll get a long way. My professor once told me: Figure out what you love to do, and then get someone to pay you to do it.

What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?

Most aspects of student life and student-to-work life.

Is there anything else you’d like to tell us?

:)
