Briefly describe the organisation you work for

A Fire and Rescue service covering Cleveland which includes both coastal areas and industry with some high levels of social deprivation in some towns.

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

An interest in people issues. Not really having a plan at first but fell into HR which is a varied career.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

Yes. I considered teaching but opted not to go down that path.

Describe your most memorable day at work

I used to be the nurse recruitment lead in a big hospital I organised an open day for nurse recruitment and over 70 peolpe came I was very proud.

Are there any challenges associated with your job?

Tight timescales, sometimes being the bearer of unwanted news, having to challenge others

What’s your work environment and culture like?

A nice team

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

I'll be honest I don't think I did any! I was happy being with my friends and socialising!

What would you like to do next with your career?

I'm happy with this level it gives me a good work life balance.

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
