A day in the life of a Freelancer in Humanitarian Affairs in Hong Kong
I had the opportunities to visit Afghanistan and Bosnia-Herzegovina to see post-war societies first-hand. The research, coordination and communication skills learnt from these activities are useful for my career.
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
I last worked in International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), one of the major humanitarian actors globally.
What do you do?
My last role was to manage an office which supports humanitarian services in 13 countries of the Caribbean.
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
Seeing myself as Cosmopolitan and Humanitarian, I have a belief that all humanity is one family. Therefore I have always wanted a career that gives me opportunities to serve people, to travel and see different cultures.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
No. I have always wanted to be in the humanitarian aid since I studied my programme.
Describe your most memorable day at work
There are many. But one of them must be monitoring a hurricane impacting the Caribbean islands. We had to work around the clock to get information and make decisions to support the people on the ground.
What’s your work environment and culture like?
There are a lot of opportunities to meet people of different nationalities. You will enjoy solving problems together in a multicultural environment.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
I didn't have lots of extracurricular activities as the coursework itself was heavy but very interesting. I had the opportunities to visit Afghanistan and Bosnia-Herzegovina to see post-war societies first-hand. The research, coordination and communication skills learnt from these activities are useful for my career.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Have a vision for the society and a (related) goal for your career.
