A day in the life of a Marketing and Communications Manager in the United Kingdom

Marketing and Communications in Higher Education

How I looked for work

I've worked at The University of Manchester in a number of roles for the last 18 years - when I advertise a role I use Marketing Weekly and The Drum and also post on LinkedIn. jobs.ac.uk is useful for roles in higher education

How I found out about the job

Already worked there

The recruitment process

Informal interview, formal interview, presentation and tour of The John Rylands Library

My advice to students considering work

Do your homework on the organisation you are applying to work for. Refer to specific services and projects to help you stand out from the crowd.

What I do

I manage the Marketing and Communications Team at The University of Manchester Library. I lead on integrated marketing campaigns, market research and internal communications. This includes marketing for The John Rylands Library in Manchester city centre.

Skills I use and how I developed them

Digital marketing; campaign planning, delivery and evaluation. I studied online for the CIM professional diploma in marketing and also recently completed the Certified Digital Marketing Professional Program.

What I like most

Leading a team of marketing professionals to deliver engaging campaigns to increase awareness and uptake of Library services and working with Library colleagues to shape outstanding services that meet the needs of our customers.

What I like least

Email overload!

What surprised me most

The variety of the work - no two days are the same.
