About the job

What I do

I work on European Business Strategy within the Wholesale Payments arm of the firm, which covers the Treasury, Merchant and Trade businesses of the Investment Bank

Skills I use and how I developed them

Project management, effective delegation, good reporting methodologies and ability to represent and action my stakeholders interests/requirements

What I like most

The variety of challenges, tasks and people I engage with help develop my experience and provide great, early career exposure with Wholesale Payments

What I like least

Sometimes subject to forces outside of my control. Being a PMO also means that you know the end-to-end of the programmes, its goals and intentions, but never the finer technical or operational details of issues until they arise

What surprised me most

The respect very senior people show me and their willingness to listen to me in my role. This shouldn't really be a surprise but it is a big confidence boost

Finding and applying for the job

How I found out about the job

Personal contacts

The recruitment process

1st Round: 90-minute situational-judgement assessment

2nd Round: Further 90-minute assessment on CV experience with seniors, followed by a 2-hour task in groups, and 30 personal presentation

My advice to students

My advice to students considering work

Be kind to yourself; navigating the world of work during your final year is tough

My advice about working in my industry

Getting into the industry is the hardest step; be willing to compromise to get a foot in the door; don't sell yourself as just another banker in waiting - banks are just interested in economics students, so be willing to detail where you passions lie beyond banking

Contacting me

I'm happy to offer advice on the application process or give greater detail on my time in investment banking/corporate finance, as well as living/working in London
