Why we are recruiting

Profile photo of Mark Freeman

As part of significant further investment we are seeking to appoint to a number of new Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Professor positions. This comes ahead of the School's move to a new building at the heart of our campus in 2020.

We have an ambitious vision to become the home for world-leading interdisciplinary scholars in the UK. Our aim is to expand the traditional restrictions of business schools, focusing on collaborative, collegiate and interdisciplinary work. We are seeking to recruit faculty members, based around the four broad interdisciplinary research themes of the School which are:

  • Equality, Justice and Ethics
  • Risk, Innovation and the Economy
  • Sustainability and Resilience
  • Management and the Humanities

By working together, I firmly believe that TYMS can realise its potential and lie at the vanguard of the next generation of Business and Management Schools.

Dean, The York Management School

Why we work here

It's best to let our staff speak for themselves – the accompanying video shows our recent appointments and lets them explain why they decided to join the School.

Research areas

Sustainability and Resilience

This theme brings together consumer and marketing researchers, HRM specialists, strategy and international business scholars, supply chain experts and social scientists from across the Management School to explore, interrogate and challenge a wide variety of ideas relating to how we can make life on this planet more sustainable, circular and resilient. We are a bridge between the School and the sustainability-related university research themes including: environmental sustainability and resilience, health and wellbeing, and justice and equality.

Risk, Innovation and the Economy

This theme is about management in a world of technological and economic change and comprises three linked sub-themes:

  • Quantitative Risk Management (QRM) - using quantitative models to solve problems relating to the management of financial, actuarial and economic risks.
  • Evolution of Global Business Institutions - studying trends in the management of global businesses including IP and branding, human engagement with digital technology and complexity in business operations.
  • Open and User Innovation (OUI) - developing new methods of organising and managing the innovation process that emphasise the role of interaction with user communities.

We are closely allied to the university research theme of risk, evidence and decision-making.

Management and Humanities

This research theme aims towards the humanization of organization and management processes by drawing on work in the arts and humanities disciplines. Whilst strengths include Management and Business History, Art and Aesthetics of Organization, and the use of Qualitative and Arts-Based Methods in Research (painting, drawing, photography, film, theatre and music, through the Centre for the Study of Working Lives), we are also active in literature and philosophy.

We reflexively question how we define the human, and what it means to be human, linking to recent work in science and the digital humanities, medical humanities, media and creative/cultural industries. We are associated with the university research themes of creativity, and communication and culture.

Equality, Justice and Ethics

Post of My Home Is Not My Home talk

The effects of inequality and lack of social justice are multiple and can impact on individual and collective well-being, diminish growth and productivity and undermine trust in key societal institutions. As such building an economy that works for all is a crucial grand challenge facing most societies. Organizations, their structures, practices and strategies are central to this agenda both as potential barriers and solutions to inequality.

This research theme is focused on aspects of equality and social justice including, but not limited to: social mobility, diversity management, precarity and austerity, international inequality, corporate social responsibility, employee participation, employee well-being, philanthropy and industrial democracy. We are also interested in the broad contextual trends which frame inequality including: financialization, managerialism, neo-liberalism, austerity and the discourses and practices of shareholder value. This theme feeds into the university justice and equality theme.

About the School and The University of York

About the School

The school positions itself within the 1963 founding principles of the University of York which are excellence, equality and opportunity for all. To achieve this, we emphasise an ethical and sustainable approach to management and an appreciation of the benefits of diversity.

We are a research intensive school with a strong and improving track record. The University of York was ranked 14th overall in REF 2014. TYMS achieved an overall GPA of 2.87 in the REF 2014 and 50% of our impact was ranked as 4 star. Colleagues in the school successfully bid for approximately £4m of RCUK funding as Principal Investigators in 2016, and a number of our faculty have established records of publishing in CABS 4-ranked journals.

We place considerable emphasis on helping our staff to increase their skills, providing access to extensive training and development opportunities. Annually, academics are allocated a Personal Research Allowance to assist with research and conference attendance. There is the opportunity for study leave, awarded periodically, on the basis of agreed research plans and available resources.

York and Yorkshire

Benefits and advice on moving to the UK

TYMS is already home to staff from more than nineteen countries and five continents, and welcomes staff from around the world. Both the School and University provide advice and support to staff to help them in relocating to York. We run a range of internal meetings and seminars, including social activities, which will enable staff to meet and get to know their new colleagues.

The City of York

Internationally acclaimed for its rich heritage and historic architecture, York's bustling streets are filled with visitors from all over the world. Within its medieval walls you will find the iconic gothic Minster, Clifford’s Tower and the Shambles - just a few of the many attractions.

But York isn't just a great place to visit - it's also a great place to live and work. While nourishing a vibrant cosmopolitan atmosphere, York still maintains the friendly sense of community unique to a small city.

Shopping, culture and entertainment

York boasts specialist and unique boutiques but also all the high street stores on its busy shopping streets. Alongside them you will find cinemas, theatres, an opera house, art galleries, a vast range of restaurants, live music venues and clubs. York is particularly renowned for its multitude of pubs and bars, from the modern to the medieval.

Yorkshire

The Lonely Planet guide recently declared Yorkshire the third best region in the world to visit. There is something to cater to every taste, whether it be the rugged landscapes of the Moors or the Dales, the picturesque seaside towns of Scarborough and Robin Hoods Bay, the gothic architecture of Whitby or the vibrancy of cosmopolitan Leeds.
