Why we are recruiting

Profile photo of Susan Kane

The HR Mission is to recruit, develop and retain individuals whose work advances the vision and strategy of the University of York. Our role within the Leadership and Learning and Development team is to be responsive to the needs of teams and individuals to ensure they are able to contribute fully and reach their full potential, whilst being proactive in reading the ever changing environment of York and the wider HE landscape. This blend has highlighted a number of key areas we wish to develop and has resulted in us being able to grow our team and diversify our existing provision.

The matrix approach to Leadership and Learning & Development enables each team member to have a number of primary portfolios to take ownership of, whilst contributing to all areas of the provision. This approach increases our agility to respond to the needs of the institution, creates a culture of working collaboratively and sharing best practice and enables us to collectively work towards a common purpose.

Susan Kane,
Assistant HR Director - Leadership and Learning & Development

Areas of focus

Student leadership

Working collaboratively with Careers, we are making an instrumental contribution in designing and delivering a framework and approach that will underpin Student Leadership at York. That, coupled with a very generous gift from Lord Laidlaw to support 25 Undergraduate Students through the Laidlaw Research and Leadership Scholarship Provision will see us diversify our leadership offering even further.

Accreditation and commercialisation

2016 resulted in us being the only Higher Education Institution to be awarded the Princess Royal Training Award in recognition of our holistic and comprehensive approach to Leadership Development. We now want to accredit our leadership provision and offer this commercially, to the student community and across our internal staff leadership programmes.

Talent

As part of the institutions commitment to rewarding and recognising the contribution of support staff, our Professional@York initiative has seen the introduction of Development and Assessment Centres across various staff groups. 98% of individuals who have taken part would recommend this to colleagues. In addition we introduced a Graduate Scheme in 2015 and revised our approach to performance review in 2016. These three initiatives will form the basis of developing a more strategic approach to talent management at York.

Organisational development

In addition to completing a full review and update of our existing core Learning and Development provision, we will also be supporting the University and Departments in implementing a number of key Strategic change initiatives. Working closely with specific departments and collaborative groups we will identify, design and facilitate bespoke solutions that will enhance performance.

About the team

Susan

Assistant HR Director – Leadership and Learning & Development

I joined the team in 2009 as Leadership Development Advisor to work with our HR Director to develop a holistic approach to leadership development. As the team has grown, so has our core provision driven by the proactive and creative nature of the team responding to the needs of the institution. Over the past 9 years the team have worked collaboratively with various stakeholders across the institution and have co-created and established 7 core leadership programmes. There has been a lot of fun along the way and this work has resulted in three Times Higher Awards and more recently a Princess Royal Training Award.

I have always found the community at York welcoming, open, friendly and very supportive. No one day is the same and working with such a diverse community has kept me feeling challenged. The opportunities available to staff both socially and professionally are some of the best I have experienced.

Lindsay

Leadership and Staff Development Advisor

I have worked within Learning and Development for 3 years. While I’ve learnt a lot about the University in that time, the longer I work here, the more I realise how little I know of the institution due to its complexity and ever evolving nature. This makes it a continually challenging place to work, especially as the Learning and Development team continues to evolve at an even faster rate. There are always a variety of initiatives and projects to get involved in and opportunities for taking on responsibilities. The challenges are always fully supported by a great team who are cheerful, helpful and continually deliver beyond expectations.

Andy

Leadership and Staff Development Advisor

For me the University offers a great mixture of collaboration and support, challenge and opportunity. I have the opportunity to work with staff from different departments, grades and backgrounds engaging with them and supporting them to reach their potential. Despite there being a large number of staff, I feel I'm part of a team and part of helping the university to achieve its strategy. Add to that a great campus and superb facilities to indulge my athletic and cycling passion where before I had to travel for such opportunity and now they are all on the doorstep.

Bryony

Senior Administrator

I have worked with the Learning and Development team for 2 and a half years now. The work, and my career, has constantly developed and grown since I started here and doesn’t show signs of stopping – one of the many reasons I enjoy the job so much!

The Learning and Development team is supportive, fun, friendly and ambitious, and the job also means you get to work with a variety of friendly staff from all over the University. It's a great environment to work in, the flexible working is really good and I love how varied the work is with this team.

Amanda

Learning and Development Administrator

As a recent addition to the Learning and Development Team (only one week in!), I have found all staff within Learning and Development to be approachable, friendly and welcoming. The support I have received whilst learning the different aspects of the role, has been enormous.

From what I have witnessed so far, the opportunities to develop and grow, both personally and professionally, are fantastic - one of the main reasons why I chose to apply for a Learning and Development position at the University of York.

York is a great city to work and live. With the City Walls, Clifford’s Tower and York Minster right on your doorstep, there is much to visit and explore.

Alex

Leadership and Staff Development Project Manager (Student leadership)

I have recently joined the Learning and Development team and I am delighted to be working with some very talented colleagues. This has lead to activity which really makes a difference to staff and, more recently, students. The team have won awards for the quality and the impact of their staff provision. My role is to take the success of the staff provision and build on this and apply it to the student community. This opportunity is very exciting and for me is at the core of improving the student experience for all our students.

The University of York

Founded on principles of excellence, equality and opportunity for all, the University of York opened in 1963 with just 230 students. In 2016 it is the centre for almost 16,000 students across more than 30 academic departments and research centres. In over 50 years we have become one of the world's leading universities and a member of the prestigious Russell Group.

The University has consistently been recognised as one of the leading Higher Education Institutes and is one of just six post-war universities which appear in the world top 100 (2013-14) and 15th in the Times & Sunday Times league table (2016). The University of York has won six Times Higher Education (THE) Awards and five Queen’s Anniversary Prizes.

We are proud of our association with Athena SWAN, holding ten awards in support of women in science, with gold awards for Chemistry and Biology as well as a University-wide bronze award.

Of 154 universities that took part in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) in 2014, the University of York ranked 14th overall and 10th on the impact of our research. The University is consistently in the top ten UK research universities and attracts over £60m a year of funding from research alone.

Centred around the picturesque village of Heslington on the edge of the city of York, our colleges are set in an attractive landscaped campus. With a compact and easy to get around design, York enjoys a safe, friendly atmosphere. The campus offers a wealth of facilities, which includes bars, shops, theatres and concert halls all within easy walking distance.

York and Yorkshire

The City of York

Internationally acclaimed for its rich heritage and historic architecture, York's bustling streets are filled with visitors from all over the world. Within its medieval walls you will find the iconic gothic Minster, Clifford’s Tower and the Shambles - just a few of the many attractions.

But York isn't just a great place to visit - it's also a great place to live and work. While nourishing a vibrant cosmopolitan atmosphere, York still maintains the friendly sense of community unique to a small city.

Shopping, culture and entertainment

York boasts specialist and unique boutiques but also all the high street stores on its busy shopping streets. Alongside them you will find cinemas, theatres, an opera house, art galleries, a vast range of restaurants, live music venues and clubs. York is particularly renowned for its multitude of pubs and bars, from the modern to the medieval.

Yorkshire

The Lonely Planet guide recently declared Yorkshire the third best region in the world to visit. There is something to cater to every taste, whether it be the rugged landscapes of the Moors or the Dales, the picturesque seaside towns of Scarborough and Robin Hoods Bay, the gothic architecture of Whitby or the vibrancy of cosmopolitan Leeds.
