I undertook both my MA and PhD at the University of Cambridge before taking lecturer roles at the Makerere University in Uganda and then the University of Cambridge. In 1995 I became Professor at the University of York. Between 2002-2004 I undertook a Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship and in 2006-2007 I was made president of the Aristotelian Society. I have also held the position of Deputy Chair of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority. In 2014, I became an Emeritus Professor here in York.
