AHRC Funded & NERC Studentships

These awards are competitive and can be awarded to any project, on the basis of academic excellence and fit to Departmental Research Priorities.  The deadline for the AHRC applications is 2 March 2012.  The deadline for NERC applications is 2 April 2012. If you are interested in applying for either a NERC or AHRC PhD award, you should contact supervisors before submitting your application.

Funded Projects

 

1. DISPERSE: Marine palaeoecology and isotope analysis

Supervisior: Geoff Bailey

The studentship project is focussed on the Holocene shell mounds of the Farasan Islands in the southern Red Sea, and on the analysis of the substantial marine-mollusc assemblages recovered from recent excavations including samples already in hand and participation in fresh fieldwork to collect new samples. 2. Songo Mnara: Exploring urban space through phytolith studies

Supervisor: Stephanie Wynne-Jones

 

 

The project explores the potential of plant phytoliths to expand our understandings of the use of space within an urban centre of the 14th - 16th centuries. The PhD project will be an integral part of research at Songo Mnara, a Swahili stonetown on the southern coast of Tanzania.

3. InterArchive: MPhil Project

Supervisor:

Investigating the application of soil micromorphology to the interpretation of the burial environment.

4. EUROTAST: ESR2 Molecular perspectives on slave health and disease*

Supervisior: Matthew Collins

We know from historical records that slaves suffered from a wide range of diseases mainly due to dietary deficiencies and malnutrition.  Recent advances in protein mass-spectrometry can potentially offer new insights into i) dietary deficiencies and ii) pathogenic diseases of enslaved Africans.

5. EUROTAST: ESR13 Public Understandings of the Legacies of Transatlantic Slavery*

Supervisor:

The purpose of this studentship  is to research current strategies toward public presentation of these issues in different geographical localities that were tied to the Transatlantic Slave Trade – namely West Africa, Europe, the Caribbean, and the United States....
