CMaCS Funding for Research Activities

Each year, the Centre for Modern and Contemporary Studies offers a number of grants in two schemes, Small Project Grants and Research Strands, in order to support interdisciplinary work in the modern and contemporary periods.

Small Project Grants (maximum £500) are aimed at postgraduate students and staff who would like to foster an external partnership, or organise an interdisciplinary reading group, lecture, symposium, study day, workshop, or another kind of event to develop new interdisciplinary connections and grant applications.

Small Project Grants awarded

CMaCS small project grant application details are circulated each summer.

Research Strands (£1,000 per year, for 1-3 years) enable intensive research efforts in a strategic area. They are aimed primarily at staff who would like to prepare a major grant application, and provide funding to help organise events or networking activities over one or more academic years. Research Strands are selected based on originality, timeliness, historiographical and methodological significance, and the ability to generate interest from staff and students across and beyond the Centre's core disciplines in the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. CMaCS Research Strands are led by an academic member of staff, and can include collaborators who are other members of staff, postgraduate research students, and/or postdocs.
