Our Research

The Centre for Modern and Contemporary Studies supports interdisciplinary research in the modern and contemporary periods in a number of ways.

We fund and provide a home for several ongoing research strands, as well as small research projects, individual events, reading groups, and a postgraduate forum. Any staff or students working on modern and contemporary research are welcome to get in touch to discuss ways CMaCS can support your interdisciplinary research or help connect with scholars across departments and disciplines.

Research Strands

Research strands are funded by the centre and led by staff in one or more departments at the University, serve as focal points for research activity within CMaCS. Leaders of research strands organise conferences, reading groups, study days and other opportunities for collaboration in a series of events held over an academic year or more, in preparation for publications, major grant applications or other forms of research development.

Small Project Grants

The centre also funds small projects run postgraduate students and staff who would like to foster an external partnership, or organise an interdisciplinary reading group, lecture, symposium, study day, workshop, or another kind of event to develop new interdisciplinary connections and grant applications.

Postgraduate Forum

CMaCS supports a lively community of research students working within the modern and contemporary period to present pieces of work and to share ideas with other students from across the humanities disciplines.
