A Celebration of Professor Mark Ormrod (1957-2020)

Posted on 4 January 2021

On 18 December 2020 we celebrated Mark's life at an online memorial, which can now be viewed online.

Professor Mark Ormrod was a leading historian, senior academic, former director of the Centre for Medieval Studies, and a valued and greatly missed colleague. He passed away in August after a long illness. We include an appreciation written by Professor Sarah Rees Jones.

On 18 December 2020 we celebrated Mark's life at an online event. Dr Joanna Laynesmith (University of Reading), Professor Chris Given-Wilson (University of St Andrews) and Professor Judith Buchanan (St Peter’s College, Oxford), among others, recalled Mark’s many roles as teacher and mentor, scholar and author, colleague and friend. The memorial is now available to view on Youtube. We plan to hold a memorial in York Minster once Covid-19 restrictions allow.

We are still collecting memories or photographs of Mark, which can sent to: cms-office@york.ac.uk

We have also set up the Mark Ormrod Fund to support causes that reflect his life, work and values, including the CMS Masters Anniversary Scholarships, CMS Mark Ormrod PhD prize, CMS new research themes, and the Alcuin Scholarships (for Medieval History) in the Department of History.
