We are delighted to announce that on 6th February, Nelleke gave her inaugural lecture as a professor at the University of Groningen
In 2010, Nelleke IJssennagger van der Pluijm came to the CMS as a Visiting Student from the Netherlands. Nelleke went on to exciting things, getting her MA and PhD ('Central because Liminal: Frisia in a Viking Age North Sea World', 2017, University of Groningen), before taking up curatorial posts with the Fries Museum (NL), and the National Trust (Cornwall, UK). She returned to the Netherlands in 2021 to take up a post as Managing Director of the Fryske Akademy, which undertakes research into Frisian language, history, and culture.
We are delighted to announce that on 6th February, Nelleke gave her inaugural lecture as a professor at the University of Groningen. Nelleke has taken up a chair in the
Cultural history of the southern North Sea region in the early Middle Ages and Viking Age. She is leading the field in this area, and really works in the best, interdisciplinary traditions of the CMS, so do look out for her papers! You can
read a transcript of her lecture.
