Katie J. T. Herrington
Postdoctoral Researcher



Katie Jane Tyreman Herrington is Curator at the Stanley and Audrey Burton Gallery, Leeds University Library Galleries. She is also a Non-Stipend Postdoctoral Researcher affiliated with the Department of History of Art, University of York. In this role, she won funding for and has led the Tate British Art Specialist Network Sub Group 'British Women Artists 1750 to 1950' since 2015 (Herrington’s recent project was the co-curation, with Rebecca Milner (Curator of Fine Arts, Manchester Art Gallery), of the exhibitionAnnie Swynnerton: Painting Light and Hope, Manchester Art Gallery, 2018. Her edited collection Joanna Mary Boyce, George Price Boyce and Henry Tamworth Wells: British Painters in the Mid Nineteenth Century (forthcoming Boydell & Brewer, 2019) is also in progress.

In 2013 Herrington undertook an AHRC funded postdoctoral Cultural Engagement Fellowship entitled Three Graces: Victorian women, visual art and exchange which was a collaboration between the University of York and Victoria & Albert Museum. The chief outcome of that project was an online exhibition: As Network Facilitator for the Enchanted Modernities: Theosophy, Modernism and the Arts, c. 1875-1960Leverhulme Trust international network at the University of York (2012-15) she assisted with the mounting of two project exhibitions and the preparation of the book Enchanted Modernities: Theosophy, the arts and the American West (Fulgur Estoria, 2018), in which she has two chapters “Beatrice Wood: Theosophy, Krishnamurti and Enchanted Vessels” and “Artists Biographies.”

She is interested in nineteenth-century British and European art and particularly concerned with the material qualities of Victorian paintings. Her research focuses on artworks produced by a number of women artists who worked beyond predetermined categories and between disciplines and media and explores their formation of specific artistic identities through their art.
