Modern and Contemporary Research Cluster with Dorothy Price

Abstract

Please Join Dr James Boaden in conversation with Professor Dorothy Price FBA about her research and curatorial practice. As former Editor of Art History Price pursued an editorial agenda focused on decolonial rethinking of the discipline through the lens of critical race, formulating the notion of a critical race art history as one that was long overdue for the field. Alongside her Editorial tenure, Price is also a curator, having worked closely with British artist Chantal Joffe RA for a number of years, as well as with the Royal Academy of Arts and most recently with the Courtauld Gallery. Her curatorial practice straddles her research and teaching interests in the work of women artists, German modernism and aspects of post-war British art.

Her last exhibition was Making Modernism at the Royal Academy of Arts until February 2023; her current exhibition is a long overdue reassessment of the work of leading Black feminist artist Claudette Johnson, Claudette Johnson Presence at The Courtauld, which runs until January 2024, after which her major exhibition Entangled Pasts: Art, Colonialism and Change, opens in the Main Galleries at the Royal Academy of Arts in February 2024.

She has also contributed essays for forthcoming shows including, Lotte Laserstein - A Divided Life at the Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Women in Revolt! at Tate Britain, Ekow Eshun's The Time is Always Now at the NPG, Tate Modern's Expressionists: Kandinsky, Münter and Der Blaue Reiter, Museum of Modern Art, New York's forthcoming exhibition on the work of Käthe Kollwitz and others.
