The research work packages
The programme of research in the TB and Tobacco Project consists of six major themes, each of which is linked to a set of research objectives and a distinct (but inter-related) work package (WP).
Work package 1: Development and feasibility
The objectives of WP1 are as follows:
- Adapt the delivery of the tobacco cessation strategies to the local context
- Identify resources and competencies for health professionals required to deliver the strategies
- Identify organisational capacity required to deliver.
Work package 2: Effect evaluation
The objectives of WP2 are as follows:
- Assess the effect of cytisine with behavioural support vs. behavioural support alone on smoking cessation and TB outcomes (A multi-centre, two-arm, double-blind, placebo-controlled, individually randomised controlled trial)
- Assess any differences in the effectiveness across various sub-groups
- Translate and validate MPSS (Mood and Physical Symptoms Scale) and SUTS (Strength of Urges to Smoke)
- Assess adverse effects.
Work package 3: Economic evaluation
The objective of WP3 is as follows:
- Assess cost-effectiveness of cytisine with behavioural support on smoking cessation and TB outcomes.
Work package 4: Process evaluation
The objective of WP4 is as follows:
- Assess all relevant components of the design and delivery of the smoking cessation programme.
Work package 5: Context evaluation
The objectives of WP5 are as follows:
- Identify contextual factors that influence the delivery of tobacco cessation strategies
- Measure which of the contextual factors identified above predict the effect of tobacco cessation strategies
- Assess whether contextual factors identified above and found influential (above), change over time.
Work package 6: Scale-up and sustainability
The objectives of WP6 are as follows:
- Further refine tobacco cessation strategies
- Predict the likely costs and effects of scaling-up tobacco cessation strategies
- Assess the extent to which tobacco cessation strategies are sustained in the medium-term
- Identify the likely obstacles and opportunities for scaling-up tobacco cessation strategies.
Work package 7: Management and coordination
A further work package (WP7) is concerned with management and coordination of the project.
