The conference’s theme 'Mental Health: person and place'

This has been an unprecedented time, and practitioners, patients and members of the public have needed to adapt and identify new ways of working and coping. We have learnt the importance of connection and connecting with people and places, and been reminded of the huge inequalities that exist within our society. Our own mental health has been challenged and the need to be kind to ourselves and each other is key. The changing situation has meant we have needed to adapt, and then adapt again, as restrictions and our knowledge change. Hopefully we are now starting to transition back to a more ‘normal’ way of life, although how we should do this, and what that entails, remains largely unknown.

We chose the theme of ‘person and place’, drawing on evidence from the Mental Health Foundation’s ongoing research into mental health during the coronavirus pandemic.  Their research demonstrates just how important nature and the environment have been to our mental health, but also that there are barriers to people accessing the natural world. The Foundation’s theme for Mental Health Awareness Week 2021 is ‘Nature and the environment’
