Lunar Semiotics in "Ancrene Wisse" and "Pearl"

Tuesday 16 May 2023, 5.00PM

Speaker(s): Dr Ayoush Lazikani (Hertford College, Oxford)

Medieval Literatures Seminar

This paper will reflect on how the moon signifies in two English Christian devotional texts. It would be impossible to generalize about devotional encounters with the moon, as there is a spectrum of views on and approaches to it in medieval English Christian texts. But what we often find is that the moon can signify brokenness and limitation. No clearer is this than in two Middle English texts: the anchoritic guidance prose Ancrene Wisse and the alliterative poem Pearl.
